What You Can Build Using K-12 JUNO STEM KIT
In the "LDR Segment" project from the K-12 JUNO STEM Kit, children connect a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) to a simple electronic circuit that controls a segment display (typically a single bar LED or a segment in a seven-segment display). If the LDR senses light, the segment display turns on and glows brightly. When the LDR is covered or in darkness, the segment display switches off. This project demonstrates how sensors can automate outputs based on environmental changes.

What You Can Learn
LDR Functionality: Kids see firsthand how an LDR’s resistance drops in light and rises in darkness, influencing current flow.
Basic Sensor Circuitry: Students learn to wire the LDR, transistor (or simple logic circuit), power supply, and segment display, creating a responsive system.
Automation Basics: The immediate on/off effect models real-world automation, like streetlights and light-sensitive displays.
Troubleshooting: If the segment doesn’t react, learners gain diagnostic skills by checking wiring, LDR orientation, and light exposure.
Real Life Problem Solving
Device Understanding: This project is a model for automatic display, lighting, or alert systems that respond to changes in light—like night indicators, counters, and smart home devices.
Design Thinking: Children can adjust sensitivity, use more segments, or combine with other sensors for creative, themed projects.
Creativity: Students invent games, create secret message displays, or design mood lighting that responds to ambient light.
Foundation for Future Learning: Understanding this simple automation circuit sets the stage for more advanced sensor projects, IoT, and robotics.
Why LDR Segment Matters
The LDR Segment project makes environmental sensing tangible and magical—proving how a simple change in lighting can control real electronic outputs. It’s a memorable introduction to automation, sensors, and real-world STEM problem-solving.
With Project 29: LDR Segment, every child learns how the world can glow and respond to their environment—just with a wave of light!
